Czech public universities teach six-year General Medicine programs in English that lead to the MUDr. degree, the Czech equivalent of an MD. Official tuition for 2026/27 is EUR 24,250 a year at Charles University's First Faculty of Medicine in Prague and CZK 380,000 a year at Masaryk University in Brno. Admission is by written science tests, with interviews at some schools, and the Czech accreditation agency gained recognition from the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) in 2025.

What the MUDr. degree is

MUDr. stands for Medicinae Universae Doctor. It is a six-year, master's-level medical qualification that you enter directly from secondary school, in the same long-cycle format used across Central Europe. There is no separate undergraduate degree first, so school leavers and university graduates usually start in the same first year.

Teaching in the English-language programs is in English throughout, but Czech language classes are part of the early years so that you can work with patients later on.

Schools and fees

We currently profile two Czech faculties with English-taught medicine. Charles University has several medical faculties; the First Faculty in Prague is the one covered here.

School City Official annual tuition Fee year Degree
Charles University, First Faculty of Medicine Prague EUR 24,250 2026/27 MUDr., 6 years
Masaryk University, Faculty of Medicine Brno CZK 380,000 2026/27 MUDr., 6 years

Both figures are from the faculties' official admissions pages. A few points to note:

  • Charles charges an application fee of EUR 285 on top of tuition, and its EUR 24,250 figure applies to first-year students starting in 2026/27.
  • Masaryk sets its fee in Czech koruna, so its cost in euros or dollars moves with exchange rates. At roughly 21 CZK to the dollar, CZK 380,000 is about USD 18,100.
  • Both programs start with the Czech academic year in the autumn.

For comparison, Comenius University in neighbouring Slovakia runs a similar six-year program in Bratislava; see its program page. All Czech listings are on the Czech Republic country page.

How admission works

There is no national entrance exam for international applicants. Each faculty sets its own tests.

Charles University, First Faculty of Medicine

According to the faculty's 2026/27 admissions page, the entrance exam has two rounds:

  1. Written test: a 90-minute multiple-choice test in biology, chemistry and general science, worth 75 points, with no negative marking.
  2. Interviews: applicants who pass the written test take five consecutive 10-minute mini interviews, held online, worth up to 100 points in total.

The faculty states that no English proficiency certificate is required for the 2026/27 intake and that no knowledge of Czech is needed to apply.

Masaryk University

Masaryk's Faculty of Medicine admits students through entrance tests in chemistry, biology and physics. Its application period for 2026/27 ran from 2 January to 31 July 2026.

Preparing for the tests

Both schools test secondary-school level science, so the strongest preparation is solid final-year biology and chemistry, plus physics for Masaryk. Past papers or sample questions, where the faculty publishes them, show the style and depth expected. Check deadlines early as well: application windows close months before the autumn start, and the dates differ between faculties, so put each school's deadline in your calendar as soon as it is published.

What the six years look like

The programs move from theory to clinical practice:

  • Years 1 to 3: theoretical and pre-clinical subjects such as anatomy, biochemistry and physiology, alongside Czech language classes.
  • Years 4 to 5: clinical rotations. At Masaryk these take place in individual clinics, mainly at the faculty hospitals, with summer practical training blocks.
  • Year 6: pre-graduation practical training, at Masaryk mainly in the faculty hospitals.

At Charles's First Faculty, clinical teaching is based mainly at the General University Hospital in Prague, with departments at other Prague hospitals including the Military University Hospital, Motol, Thomayer and Na Bulovce.

Living costs

As the capital, Prague tends to cost more than Brno. In both cities, living costs are usually lower than in Western European capitals or large US cities, but you should budget for rent, food, transport, health insurance and residence permit costs. Each faculty publishes guidance for international students that is the best starting point for a budget.

Recognition and licensing

Accreditation

Czech degree programs are accredited by the National Accreditation Bureau for Higher Education (NAB). The faculties report that NAB received WFME recognition for a full 10-year term, announced in January 2025. This recognition matters mostly for students planning to work outside the EU, especially in the United States.

Working in the United States

To take the USMLE and apply for US residency, international graduates need ECFMG Certification, and their school must be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools as meeting ECFMG eligibility requirements. Accreditation by a WFME-recognized agency also satisfies ECFMG's Recognized Accreditation Policy, which ECFMG began implementing in November 2024.

Masaryk's Faculty of Medicine states that its students and graduates apply through ECFMG to take the USMLE. It reports students' USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK results to the US Department of Education for Federal Student Aid purposes, and the university reported in 2013 that its English-language program was approved for US federal student loans. If you plan to use US loans, confirm current eligibility with each school, since loan status can change.

Our guide to the USMLE for international medical graduates sets out the full exam and certification sequence.

Working in the UK and EU

The Czech Republic is an EU member, so the MUDr. is an EU medical qualification. EU nationals generally benefit from automatic recognition across the EU. The UK's General Medical Council accepts a "relevant European qualification" from an EEA country for registration without the PLAB test and states that nationality is no longer relevant for this route; language and other checks still apply. Practising in the Czech Republic itself requires meeting Czech licensing and language requirements.

How the Czech Republic compares

Compared with Poland and Hungary, Czech English-taught programs sit at the higher end of Central European tuition at Charles, and closer to the regional middle at Masaryk. The admission process at Charles, with online interviews, also places more weight on communication than a test-only route. If cost is the deciding factor, our guides to studying medicine in Poland and studying medicine in Hungary compare official fees across those countries.

Key takeaways

  • Czech universities offer six-year English-taught General Medicine programs leading to the MUDr., equivalent to an MD.
  • Official 2026/27 tuition is EUR 24,250 at Charles University's First Faculty and CZK 380,000 at Masaryk University.
  • Charles uses a written test in biology, chemistry and general science followed by five online mini interviews; Masaryk tests chemistry, biology and physics.
  • Expect Czech language classes in the early years to prepare for patient contact.
  • The Czech accreditor NAB has held WFME recognition since 2025, supporting US licensing pathways.
  • A Czech MUDr. is an EU qualification that the UK's GMC accepts through its European qualification route.
